While participating in battle as any unit you choose (and freely switching between soldiers and vehicles on a whim), you can also dictate orders to the rest of your soldiers. Standard grunts, bazookas, anti-air guns, and high-powered assault troopers cover most of your infantry while your vehicular arsenal includes jets, tanks, zippy little recon cars, and a lot more. In each game, players assume command of a sizable squad of numerous specialized soldiers and vehicles, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Even today, the games are absolutely fantastic, making it all the sadder that we may never hear from Battalion Wars again.īehind a colorful, cartoonish graphical style and fantastic gameplay, Battalion Wars and its sequel hold up very well.

Furthermore, the series and its short, very replayable missions would especially shine on a portable system like the Switch. Within Nintendo’s deep backlog of underused and dormant franchises, Battalion Wars rests as one of the greatest and most deserving of another chance. An overlooked action-RTS Advance Wars spin-off, Battalion Wars never made much of a splash with its GameCube debut or its Wii sequel. That’s all well and good, but I’ve always been more interested in revisiting the forgotten corner of the Wars series– Battalion Wars. Fans have been pining for another Advance Wars game-and for good reason-ever since the success of Fire Emblem Awakening turned developer Intelligent Systems into a Fire Emblem machine.
